Ciao, Roma!

I’ve arrived in Italy, a day earlier than planned. My flight was originally schedule to leave Dubai on Wednesday morning at 03:20 but I found out Monday night that that flight has been temporarily cancelled due to “operational reasons”. However I was able to get a seat on the Tuesday afternoon flight leaving at 15:55. We landed on time at Fiumicino airport at 20:05. I can’t give Emirates a thumbs-up for the in-flight meal but the flight was okay. I slept for part of it, and read a book the rest of the time.

Someone thought it was a good idea to ship a cardboard box of mangos in their checked luggage, and as it had recently rained at the airport, the cardboard got wet on its way to the luggage carousel. Consequently the box had broken open and made a mess on the luggage chute. I was one of the lucky ones to get some mango mush all over my bag. Real nice. So after cleaning that up I hopped on the Terravision bus for €5 and rode in to Termini station. We had to stop along the way to pick up extra passengers from another airport bus that had broken down. It was a tight ride there but so nice to arrive in the city at night, where it was humid but fresh.

I had made arrangements with my AirBnB host just before leaving DXB to stay a night earlier than planned. He had also advised me on the cost of a taxi from Termini to his place. I’m glad he did because there was some old guy offering to take me there for more than double what it should have. I found an honest driver who took me there for the right price. Andrea welcomed me to his place on Via Sinuessa and I got settled in. After a nice hot shower & shave it was time for bed. My window, wide open, and outside 22°C and sounds of the neighbourhood echoing into my room to lull me to sleep.
